The poem “When you are old” by William Yeats had me thinking about it’s meaning and the gender of the narrator, and the gender of the subject of this poem.  After many more rereads of this poem, I came to the conclusion that the narrator is a man talking about an older woman that could possibly be a former flame of the speaker in the poem.  The narrator suggests that there was a time when this woman in her youth was much more enjoyable and loved by everyone.  It seems that the narrator feelings for this woman has changed overtime, and is simply reminding the woman in this poem how beautiful she use to be, not only on the outside but on the inside as well.
