This is a two eight line stanza, lyrical poem. The first eight lines is told using the rhyme scheme of “ABCBCDAD” Like many of A. E. Housman’s poems, he uses cliches ” I heard a wise man say”. He uses imagery “crowns” and “pounds”. Like many of Housman’s poem, alliteration can be found line 6 ” fancy free”. Lastly, line 5 intensifies the Seriousness of the poem, ‘Give pearls away and rubies’. This poem start cheerful and ends with the reader feeling a great amount of ‘rue’.
